Studies on the Influences upon the Liver, Spleen, Bone Marrow and Kidney of Various Changes in the Peripheral Blood in Rabbits

Abstract
A. Ditriech, Sachs, Popper & Schaffner had observed fatty infiltration and liver cell necrosis in the liver of patients with chronic anemia. Chaikoff & Connor, Daft & Sebrell, Gyoergy & Goldblatt had obtained the sane findings in the liver, when experimental animals were fed with low protein diet.
Albert Damon. Donald. A, Holb, Meyer M. Melicow et al observed polycythemia in approximately 10% of renal carcinomas, Cohn N. N. reported renal cysts associated with polycythemia, and Frank H. Gar4ner, John Gordn Freymann_reported recovery from polycythemia after nephrectomy for hydroneprosis.
The author has made studies on the influences of various chronic changes in the blood upon the liver, spleen, bone marrow and kidney.
The experimental methods were as follows:
35 white rabbits were divided, into 5 groups, and the following procedures ware performed during 120 days;
1st Group: 7 rabbits, 3times weakly approximately 7 c, c. of whole blood were withdrawn.
2nd Group: 7 rabbits, 3 times weekly, approximately 5 c, c. of blood plasma were with drawn.
3rd Group: 7 rabbits, 3 times weekly, approximately 7 c, c. of 50?/, red cell suspension were withdrawn.
4th group: 7 rabbits, 3times weekly approximately 7 c. c. of 50 % red cell suspension were infused.
5th group: 7 rabbits, 3times weekly, approximately 5 c. c .of blood plasma was infused. A red call count, h3naglobin aui haniit:)crimeasurement and white cell count were done, and the body weight was checked at the end of each 10day period, the total protein, albumin, globulin, A jG ratio and icterus index were measured every 20 days. -One animal as random sample from each group was sacrified at-the end of each 30 days, the rest animals were killed on the last day of the experiment (120 days), histological examination of the liver, :spleen, bone marrow and kidney was performed.
The results were as follows:
1st Group:A gradual decrease of the red cell count,-hemoglobin content and hematocrit level were found, A continuous increase in white cell count, and slight decrease in total serum protein were observed.
The average body weight showed two peaks of increase during the experimental period, but there was no increase in the final body weight.
In histological examination fatty infiltration was found ,and there was a slight increase of interstitial tissue, also there was slight liver cell necrosis, and scattered areas of small round cell infiltration in the liver. In the spleen relatively distinct red and white pulp was seen and slight bleeding in the sinuses. There were moderately increased cellular elements in the bone marrow. In the kidney sporadic swelling & distortion of the glomeruli, and slight congestion in the tubular system were recognized.
2nd Group:In the beginning there was a slight decrease in the red cell count, but no decrease during the last half of the experiment. There was a continuos slight decrease in the hemoglobin and hematocrit
level. The number of white cells has increased continuously and the serum total protein decreased slightly. The body weight showed two peaks of increase during the experiment, and the final body weight showed a slight increase.
In histological examination, slight fatty infiltration and necrosis of liver cells were found. No distinct between red and whit; pulp in the spleen was seen; there war-, no significant changes in the bone marrow; moderate swelling & distortion of the glameruli was seen, and no remarkable changes in the tubulus were observed.
3rd Group:The red cell count, hemoglobin content and hematacrit level decreased slowly; the white call count showed a tendency to increase throughout the experiment. The total serum protein decreased gradually. The body weight showed 2 peaks of increase during the experiment, the final body weight was slightly above that at the beginning of the experiment.
In histological examination, slight fatty infiltration and hepatic Cell necrosis were seen, and in the spleen the red and white pulp were relatively distinct. There was a slight increase of cellular elements in the bane marrow; In the kidney were sporadic swilling & distortion of glomeruli and partial narrowing of Bowmanns capsule seen, and there were no significant changes in the renal tubular system.
4th Group:The red cell count, hemoglobin content, and hematocrit level increased continuously up to the 90th day, after which they appeared to decrease slightly. There were no significant change in the white cell count. The total serum protein increased gradually up to Bath day, and then decreased. The body weight incerased rapidly from the beginning and showed 2 peaks of increase during the experiment.
In histological examination, granular appearance, marked congestion, slight fatty infiltration were found in the liver. The white and red pulp of the spleen were extremely distinct, there were congestion, and deposition of hemosiderin in the sinuses, and slight increase of interstitial tissue. in the bone marrow there was marked increase in cellular elements, particularly of relatively matured red cells. Many glom.ruli of kidney were swelled and distorted, and there was congestion in the cortex and tubular system.
5th Group:The red cell count showed frequent periods of increase and deceease during the experiment, and there was a slight increase in the final count. Changes in the hemoglobin content and hematocrit level ran almost parallel to the red cell count changes. The white cell count showed a tendency to increase continuousely. The total serum protein increased gradually up to 70th day, and after
wards decreased, having nearly the same value at end of the experiment as at the beginning.
The body weight increased continuously and showed 2 peaks of increase during the experiment.
In histological examination, slight liver cell necrosis, and increase of the interstitial tissue of theliver were found. In the spleen there was slight congestion in the sinuses, but no increase in distinction between red and white pulp was observed.
There was a slight increase in the interstitial tissue and no increase in the cellular elements of the
bone marrow. There was no significant changes in the kidney.
